3 Myths About Private Jets

Traveling by private jet is now closer in reach to much more people than it ever has been before. This reality is true mainly due to fractional jet share ownership, and other charter opportunities, that allow travelers to forego commercial airlines without having to own their own jet.

While private air travel is an experience that will make commercial travel even more intolerable than it already is, there are a few falsehoods out there about the experience. If you do opt to charter a jet or are planning to fly with a friend who has their own aircraft, do keep these myths in mind:

  • It is categorically untrue that smaller, private aircraft are less safe than their commercial counterparts. It is a mystery how this untruth becomes prevalent, as all aircraft, private and commercial, are all regulated by the same government agency, and must comply with all FAA guidelines and standards.

  • Probably the most favorable fact of flying private is the ability to bypass airport screening and an uncomfortable pat-down by the TSA. It is not true that private aviation passengers have to go through airport security. However, do be aware that all passengers that are traveling internationally will need to go through passport control and comply with all immigration, visa, and customs rules of the country that they are visiting.

  • Another head-scratcher is the idea that private jets are grounded more frequently due to inclement weather. Again, all aircraft follow the same regulations from the FAA. While it may be true that small, prop planes may not be able to fly through tough weather, private and commercial jets will experience the same weather delays. Additionally, private aircraft may have more flexibility in weather-related situations as they do not have to contend with the many labor stipulations that commercial airlines face.
